I believe a portrait should be really engaging. When working with actors I like the set to be basic, usually with black clothing and a black background. Shooting in low light ensures the pupils remain large, the eyes are the 'windows' to the soul and I want them to draw the viewer in.

There should be no distraction from a cluttered background - the face must be the focus. From studio flash to a gentle spotlight, very different images can be gathered during each session - a simple set of portraits for 'Spotlight' must be acquired and a further set working with shadows and depth of field, will give others perhaps more suited to editorial use.
